In Life, we may have power over our destinations but never over what awaits us!

Rachel wept!

She proposed in her heart never to have anything to do with Abubakar ever in her life.

As she deleted every one of their pictures together, beautiful memories of their friendship flooded her brain.  One particular picture made her laughed hard, the one Abubakar was trying to help her maintain her balance on a single thick rope tied between two trees.  It was one of the  Man O war drills at Camp. He almost lost his balance at the detriment of losing some of the bones as well.

That picture alone spoke so much of Abubakar nature. He was always willing to go extra miles to help anyone he could no matter what it would cost him. Abubakar received lots of whips and marks from trying to rescue girls from the unjust hands of violent soldiers. They hailed him the camp hero. A hero with many wounds most corpers didn't know about.

'Was he the one that rescued me from Papa D papa?'  Rachel asked herself.

She knew it was him but his words 'Ina sonki!' are beginning to make her doubt.

Papa D papa was the strictest soldier in the camp. He was huge and very ugly. Everything about him was huge including his belly. He was always angry. He had no patience. He was fond of young light-skinned women.

There were two sides of him to any female Corper he liked. He was a sweet-smelling lover if they agreed or a smelling tormentor if they disagreed.

He was her tormentor.
He tormented her at the slightest provocation. Her marching steps were never correct no matter how hard she tried.  Papa D papa would give her thousands of push-ups and miles to run till she was bleeding tears.

She could not report to any officials because no official could oppose him.

Unknown to her, Abubakar had been observing all the punishmentS Papa D had been giving her. He confronted him one day in front of her.

'Papa D papa,Barka da yamma' He greeted.

'ya ya Kake?' Papa D papa asked.

'Lafiya' He replied.

They continue to converse in Hausa for 20 minutes. The conversation ended with Papa D papa huge fist in Abubakar's mouth. His mouth started to bleed.

Papa D papa told him to join her in the push-ups. Abubakar knew their cultures. He couldn't fight him back. He just obeyed. He did the push-ups from early hours in the evening till late hours in the night.

The next day, Papa D papa was summoned to the barracks. He never returned.

When Rachel asked him how he was able to do that, he replied 'Power carries opportunities'.

Yet, she couldn't still figure out why he hated her.

'How could he hate her?'
: What evil did she do to him?'
'Could be possibly be joking again?'

Plenty of questions filled her head.
*********

'I don't think I can go back to that village or teach in that school'.
Rachel lamented.

'Over my dead body' Amaka cried out loud.

Amaka was a Corper like Rachel. They had been posted to the same community school in a village in the grassroots of River's state.

It was a good school with decent accommodation for corpers.

But the tales of the school were nothing to write home about. The awful tales of the school were passed down from Corp to corpers. They didn't know if they were true.

But three things they saw the one night they stayed, made them believe what they were told.

Night births evil. They were robbed of their phones and valuables because they arrived in the village late in the night.

The kidnapping was a sport for some evildoers.

Rape was the punishment for women who kept late nights or wore indecent clothes.

The next day,  after visiting the school, they hurriedly packed their things and left for their village. They were both from the same village.

The journey back home to their village, Nkpoghoro in Afikpo town of Ebonyi state was an unforgettable one.

The roads were under repair. Two lanes were totally blocked. All vehicles coming and going had to use the other two lanes. There was traffic

The journey of 6 hours took 18hours.  They were not even the opportune to reach half of the Journey before they were robbed again.

These time...they took all their footwears. The high way robbers took all the passengers phones and footwear. They beat the driver until he bled. They beat another man almost to death, an old man who tried counselling them that God will drop them mercilessly in the lake of fire for their evil acts.

The driver had to look for a safe place to park to treat his wounds before continuing the journey.

*****
'Jesus!''
All the passengers screamed.

A petrol tanker vehicle with failed breaks ran into their bus sending it to the heavens.

The bus flew into the air and landed with heavy force on another vehicle driving with speed.
The petrol tank exploded.

Fire!🔥
Fire!🔥🔥🔥
Fire! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Fire everywhere!

Someone who knows Abubakar should please tell him where Rachel is.

What happens next?
Can these corpers survive this?
All for NYSC
